Who doesn't have fond memories of pulling apart pieces of fruit leather for a fun snack as a kid? So why don't we make it more often? While the dehydration or baking step makes it seem like a long process, it's actually super easy to make. Making it with a food dehydrator is preferable to baking it, as the food dehydrator won't burn off the enzymes the same way baking can. Dehydrators are more affordable than you think and are perfect for making so many delicious snacks! From veggie chips to fruit leather to "raw" crackers and all other kinds of dried fruits and vegetables, these little contraptions are a great addition to the kitchen arsenal. If you first want to dip your toes into making dried snacks before investing in a dehydrator, try this recipe using the lowest possible temperature setting on your oven - just double the cooking time. Most fruits don't need to be cooked to make a fruit leather (like berries, apricots, citrus fruits, peaches, pears, melons, bananas, mangoes and pineapples), they just need to be puréed very smoothly first. Other, more hard or fibrous fruits and vegetables (apples, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, squash, etc.) need to be cooked and pushed through a sieve first before being baked or dehydrated. The mango, turmeric and chia mix in this recipe is surprisingly delish! Add turmeric to taste - if you decide to share with kids, they might not be as excited by the spice as you are. Fruit leathers can easily be rolled onto parchment paper and slipped into lunch boxes for a healthy and fun snack. These ones will keep for several weeks in a tightly-sealed container.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh mango, peeled and cubed
  • 3 tbsp PRANA organic whole black chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • pinch of vanilla powder or 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. If you have a food dehydrator, use it instead.
  2. Purée the mango with the vanilla and sesame seeds (add 1 tbsp of water if needed). Add the chia seeds and mix well with a spatula.
  3. Spread the mixture on the prepared baking sheet and place in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes. 
  4. The fruit leather should be completely dry and should easy to pull off the parchment paper.
